Bahama Shutters
Bahama Exterior Shutters were devised to serve a dual purpose: They act as storm shutters and are designed to provide shade over the window where they are fastened. Bahama shutters are hinged at the top rather than along the side, and the hinging runs across the top of the window so that the shutter swings out from the bottom.
Bahama shutters are also unique in that there is usually only one shutter per window instead of the traditional pair of shutters. This means that Bahama exterior shutters are extremely wide in comparison to other designs, ranging between 24 and 120 inches. In order to make the shutters stronger, a vertical stile is added to the center of the shutter to provide extra support.
Bahama shutters are equipped with adjustable side arms, too, so that they can be positioned at various angles. They can be opened just a little to allow air flow, or they can be opened to a forty five degree angle from the window’s face in order to provide shade. The side arms are retractable so that the shade can be closed and fastened if a storm approaches. With the exceptionally wide Bahama shutters, the side arm support is replaced periodically in order that the shutter may hold its position effectively.
